About Hunter
Hunter has been riding dirt bikes since he was 7 - that's a LOT of his focus right now. He's been racing for 6 years and ran his first race, a SETRA harescramble at Wrens, GA on a CRF230. Immediately after the race he said "I dont want to do that again". He changed his mind two hours later and said "That was pretty cool, I want to do that again!" So, he did a few more on the Honda and we realized that was not a race bike. Dad bought him an 04 250EXC and because of his size he took to it like a duck to water. He raced it for the SORCS harescramble series in 2006 and then went with the 2007 250XCW. He did pretty well considering he was racing some older kids and some adults.
He was fast enough to get promoted to B class in SETRA, so we moved him to B class in SORCS and he did pretty well there too. The 07-08 season he ran Sen A in the SETRA Jr. Enduro series and 250B in the HS series on the 2008 250XC. He did well in both with a 2nd and 3rd Overall, respectively, in spite of a fractured femur in October 07 that kept him from racing for a couple of months. He competed in the national GNCC series in 2008 and raced well but not competitive for the Top 5.
He competed in the SETRA Enduros in 2008-2009 and was the 250B winner. He competed in the NEPG National Enduro series in 2009 and placed 2nd in 250B in a tight battle. Hunter and Morgan Moss raced hard and Hunter won 3 Overall B races and Morgan 6. Hunter was either 1st or 2nd Overall B in every race he competed in except a 5th at TN where he crashed.
For the 2009-2010 SETRA season he competed in the full Enduro schedule in 250A and was competitive for the Overall A championship, and was the 250A champ. He was the 5th overall Enduro rider for the season. In the 2010 NEPG season he finished 4th behind 3 riders that wered promoted to their rookie season as Pros the following year.
The 2010-2011 SETRA season was dramatic with the championship coming down to the wire with Jason Chancey. Jason edged Hunter out by one of the closest seasons in SETRA history. Hunter went on to have a great year in National Enduros and eventually won the Open A championship in a tight race with Chase Bishop and Alex McCree. All 3 of those riders now move on to compete as rookie Pros in 2012.
Story of "Speck"
The "Speck" Story
A lot of people wonder how Hunter got his nickname, Speck. At the SETRA Sandlapper Enduro in 2009 he buried the bike in a big water hole and the engine filled with muddy, gritty sand and water all the way to the bottom end. As my buddy Sandy Coker, or Twink (that's another story), and I pulled the head off Hunter looked in and said "Man, hard to believe a little dirt speck caused all that."
Sandy, covered in dirt and oil and sweat, looked at him with that gleam in his eye and said "Dirt speck he//, how 'bout a million dirt specks? I guess we'll call you Dirt Speck from now on."
Well, we shortened it to Speck and that's what we've called him since.
Other interests
Other Interests
Hunters other interests include his church and youth group (becoming a Christian is for sure his greatest life accomplishment), training, road biking, and building riding challenges and courses with the Bobcat and other equipment. Recently he and Dad (and even Mom at times) have gotten into mountain biking. Hunter and Dad go 3-4 times a week and love night riding in the winter - the climbing and pedaling are awesome cross training for cardio, and the downhill skills are very similar to dirt bikes. He has even built a pretty cool pump track that Russell sparked his interest in.
He also enjoys hanging out with his buddies, both at home and at the races.
